Nyberg Becomes NDEA Northeast UniServ Director
The Association’s newest UniServ director is Karol Nyberg, a reading specialist at Community High School in Grand Forks and a former member of the NDEA Board of Directors. Her UniServ office will be based out of Grand Forks and her e-mail address is karol.nyberg@ndea.org.
Nyberg earned her bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from Mayville State University and began her teaching career in Glyndon, MN. She later received her master’s degree in special education from the University of North Dakota. She has worked as a paraprofessional, a substitute teacher, and a classroom and special education teacher at elementary, middle and high schools in Robinson, Harvey and Grand Forks.
Before being hired, Nyberg was in her second term as Grand Forks Education Association President. She has been a building representative and has served on the Executive Board of the GFEA as Educational Development Chair, Government Relation’s Co-Chair, and secretary. She has participated in NDEA Lobby Day activities, bargaining conferences, Membership Advocate Program training and Effective Locals training along with attending both NDEA and NEA Representative Assemblies and NEA Midwest Regional conferences.
Nyberg served on the NDEA Board of Directors since 2001. In that capacity she was on the budget committee, the personnel committee, and the policies and constitutional review committee. She was a member of NDEA’s ad hoc marketing subcommittee and ESEA/IDEA cadre. She was an NEA appointee to the Board of Examiners for the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and she was an NDEA appointee to the North Dakota ESPB Program Approval Advisory Committee.
Nyberg’s special interests include issues related to career/transition planning for students and alternative education. Her husband Chuck is the executive director of a retirement community in Grand Forks. She has three grown children and one grandson.
