NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION OFFERS STIPEND

National Board Certification (NBC), a voluntary and challenging professional development experience, is based on high, rigorous standards.  It consists of a two-part assessment process spanning several months:  a portfolio demonstrating how instruction meets National Board standards, and a one-day assessment in which candidates demonstrate knowledge about subject matter and classroom practices.

Because candidates internalize the National Board standards, analyze their teaching in relation to them, and provide reflective commentaries about the impact of teaching strategies on student learning, many teachers who have participated in the NBC process have characterized it as the most valuable professional development they have experienced.

North Dakota  teachers will earn a $1,000 stipend each year for the life of the certificate (10 years) if they become a National Board Certified Teacher.   The state of ND and the federal Department of Education currently provide funds to pay the $2,500 fee for the first 10 teachers who apply for NBC.

If you are not sure if this is the right professional development for you at this time, National Board also has ‘Take One!’ which allows candidates to complete one of the four National Board Certification components.  This reflective component not only gives candidates a feel for the entire NBC process but is also a good professional development experience as well.
